History
In 1969, Mr. Calvin Bright and Mr. Wolfgang Hoffman founded B & H Labeling Systems in Ceres, California, a small company that revolutionized the packaging industry with its invention of labeling equipment that applied roll-fed labels to cylindrical containers. Their very first labeler applied roll-fed paper labels to glass bottles. This first was the beginning of a forty-one year tradition of innovation by B & H that continues to this day.
Roll-fed labeling is so sophisticated and so widely used today that it is hard to imagine the major challenges faced by B & H in the early 1970's. When B & H started to design and develop its first roll-fed labelers, labels in roll form were not commercially available, which made them difficult to obtain. Appropriate adhesives for the application also simply did not exist.
Like all pioneering entrepreneurs, the engineering and manufacturing teams at B & H persevered, and overcame every challenge in their path. Their hard work and persistence created the foundation for today's vast roll-fed labeling industry.
B & H didn't stop with the invention of the first roll-fed labelers. Here are some other notable B & H firsts in the labeling industry:
| 1970 | 1st roll-fed labeling of glass containers |
| 1974 | 1st full wrap-around roll-fed labeling of glass containers |
| 1977 | 1st roll-fed labeling of PET containers |
| 1981 | 1st roll-fed labeling with film labels |
| 1984 | 1st roll-on, shrink-on roll-fed labeling |
| 1987 | 1st roll-fed labeling of aerosol cans |
| 1989 | 1st roll-fed labeling of composite cans (caulking tubes) |
| 1991 | 1st roll-fed labeling using computerized registration control system |
| 1997 | 1st roll-fed labeling with container orientation for handled containers |
| 2001 | 1st roll-fed, full-body shrink labeling for aluminum cans |
| 2003 | 1st roll-fed labeler with all electronic drive train |
